Stories, pages and characters

From editorial design at the BBC to the visual worlds of children's television, film and publishing.

THE CHALLENGE

My early career took me into two very different creative worlds: editorial publishing and children's entertainment. Both demanded strong visual storytelling, a clear understanding of the audience and the ability to create engaging work within an established creative identity.

The thinking & execution

At BBC Good Food Magazine, I worked as a full-time designer, collaborating with leading UK food photographers, stylists and celebrity chefs. Alongside designing editorial layouts, I art directed photography shoots to bring each story to life. Later, at John Davey Studio, I developed style guides for children's television, film and publishing, working on projects including Horrible Histories, Cartoon Network, Aardman Animations and CBeebies. Across both, the focus was on translating stories into engaging visual experiences while maintaining a strong and consistent creative identity.

The impact

These early projects shaped the foundations of my approach to creative work: strong storytelling, thoughtful art direction, attention to detail and consistency across formats. A career highlight was celebrating the Horrible Histories work alongside the publishing house and illustrator at a private launch event at the Tower of London.

The work, in detail.
